Exhibition: ‘images and distances - artworks by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele during an eventful time’
Vincoms Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) gladly introduces ‘images and distances’ the first time bringing to the Vietnamese audience artworks by two world famous artists, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, using digital versions.
The exhibition displays 16 high quality artworks by two Austrian artists, including the most famous artworks, such as ‘the kiss’, ‘portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer I’, ‘life and death’, ‘tree of life’ by Klimt; ‘Self portrait with lowered head’, ‘Mother and son II’, ‘Four trees’, ‘Cardinal and nun’ by Schiele
Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele were alive during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th in Vienna - a place and time of new cultural changes, along with many other famous people in Austria such as Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner, composer Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Sigmund Freud, father of modern psychology. In a place commonly regarded as the birthplace of many modern eras, Klimt and Schiele had broken away from the framework of art academia, in order to create many new and interesting forms of expression.
Gustav Klimt was the root of the symbolist movement, the person who founded the Vienna secession group being an escapist and pioneer in art. His artworks combine shapes and tunes as well as surreal colors in an artistic style that’s decoratively rich and full of suggestion, expressing a strong emotion and the desire for love, life and death.
Egon Schiele was one of the most prominent artists in the 20th century, someone who led the expressionist movements in Austria. Schiele admired Klimt, someone who had a profound effect on his style. However, Schiele’s talents and skills are very different. Not following a meticulous, delicate style of painting like Klimt, Schiele’s artworks express strong emotions through effortful free and generous shapes.
Artworks chosen to be displayed in the exhibition were all created in the early years of the 20th century - a special period of time that saw basic changes not only in art but also in the world, in that, the first world war (1914 - 1918) was the first war that spread worldwide and had goods that led to the terrifying Spanish flu, estimated to have claimed the lives of more than 50 million people. In 1918, both Klimt and Schiele passed away due to the flu.
With the aim to bring these classic artworks to a larger audience, the exhibition is a chance for anyone who cares about art to enjoy hundred year old artworks by two art virtuosos in a new and interesting way. All the artworks are under the form of high resolution images in different sizes, shown via projectors, televisions, computers as well as mobile devices. Specifically, the space of the exhibition is arranged with the physical space between the artwork and the viewer in mind, bringing an emotional and visual experience that’s new, diverse and meaningful.
