- Opening time: 10:00 - 21:00 | From 11.05.2024 to 09.06.2024
- Location: Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA), B1-R3, Vincom Mega Mall Royal City, 72A Nguyễn Trãi, Thanh Xuân, Hà Nội
From 11/05/2024, Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) will officially launch Artist Nguyễn Việt Anh’s first solo exhibition “Morphing Wonders”. The exhibition displays 37 oil paintings, curated by Lân Tinh Foundation, celebrating a tremendous milestone in the artist’s career.
“Morphing Wonders” is a fusion of observations transformed by the artist’s imagination. Through the accumulation of familiar imagery from the objective world, these elements are reinterpreted and reconstructed, forming entirely new subjective realms. The exhibition space is organised into 3 thematic sections: artificial materials, biological structures, and natural phenomena/elements.
One calls objects and events that seem ordinary “Wonders” because of a profound sense of appreciation to the constants in life. Calling them “Wonders” is like once again rediscovering the halo for the beauty that is overshadowed by the timeworn, forgotten structures or phenomena that hold feelings of desolation and regret. Through the unfiltered lens of the naked eye, original data is altered and restructured into new objects and events - “Morphing”.
Việt Anh’s artworks intertwine sharp strokes and refined curves, all of which seem to form and spiral into a futuristic, sci-fi space. Here, the artist draws inspiration from Hanoi’s modern architecture, particularly the stadium dome, the Cultural Palace, and the park scenery. His perspectives on different forms - such as bones or smoke - are also attributed to an architectural aesthetic.
Regarding the formation of his personal style, artist Việt Anh shared: “I paint things around me, mainly the rustic architecture of Hanoi. I focus on details or, at times, the whole scene as defined by the light at a certain time of day, and put them into a reconstructed space. The slightly suspended space allows me to appreciate the way the pieces merge together, and the spontaneity within the internal structure. I am currently diving into different structural forms, like smoke, bones, and architecture. Perhaps my paintings are influenced by the Pop Art movements, Abstract Expressionism, and the posters of American sci-fi movies in the 70s.”
“Morphing Wonders” is open from May 11th, 2024 to June 9th, 2024 at Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA), B1-R3, Vincom Mega Mall Royal City, 72A Nguyễn Trãi, Quận Thanh Xuân, Hà Nội.
During the exhibition times, VCCA will also host various satellite events such as artist talks and art tours to bring contemporary art closer to the public.
