VCCA is honored to host the talk: "Art in Collective” with the curator Do Tuong Linh.

In 2022, for the first time in world art history, an art collective from Indonesia ruangrupa takes the role of curating the Documenta (a prestigious contemporary art exhibition held once every five years in Kassel, Germany). In that same year, ruangrupa ranked number one in the Power 100 list of the most influential artists, innovators, gallery owners, and collectors worldwide. The tendency of art collective and art collaborations, particularly from regions outside Europe and North America, is rising. It was Documenta 15 where art collectives around the world have come together and made history. At the same time, in the heart of art centers, groups of Asian, African, and Latin American artists are emerging and making a strong impact, increasing the diversity and richness of the global art scene.

This presentation shared and introduced the historical context, art activities, and different art collective practice models drawn from six-month research in New York (with the support of the Asian Cultural Council) and two weeks in Indonesia about independent art collectives’ practice in 2023. There will be case studies from New York collectives such as Godzilla, Bernadette Corporation, 47 Canal, or CFGNY as well as Yogyakarta based artist collectives (The city is well known for having the most significant numbers of active art collectives in Indonesia.)
